WHAT IS A CHAMPION?

A professional who shares what they know.
And shows up.

A Champion is a volunteer who helps jobseekers prepare, build confidence, and make meaningful professional connections.

MissionXP is a free platform created by re:WORK TRAINING. Jobseekers use it to plan their search and track relationships. Champions use it to track their impact, see their activity and achievements, and make volunteering part of their own professional development.

More research on volunteering and career growth

27% higher odds of employment

A 2013 U.S. study found this association among people who were out of work. This measures odds, not a 27-percentage-point increase in hiring, and does not establish that volunteering caused employment.

CNCS / AmeriCorps · 2013 study

80% saw a path toward leadership

Deloitte’s 2016 hiring-influencer survey found that 80% believed volunteers transition into leadership more readily. This records respondents’ views, not the proportion of volunteers promoted.

85% would consider a résumé more favorably

In the same 2016 survey, 85% expressed willingness to look past résumé shortcomings when volunteering was included.

4–8% higher wages in adulthood

OECD’s 2025 discussion cites this range in longitudinal research following young people who volunteered as teenagers. It is not an estimated pay increase for adults joining a volunteer program.

More than a third saw career application benefits

Educational volunteers reported that volunteering supported applications for different or more senior positions. The 2021 report draws on a survey of 1,026 volunteers; it does not say a third secured those jobs.

Education and Employers with CIPD · 2021

70% favored volunteering for morale

In Deloitte’s 2017 survey of 1,000 employed U.S. volunteers, 70% rated volunteering above employer-sponsored happy hours for boosting employee morale.

Deloitte · 2017 survey announcement

Research context: Deloitte surveyed 2,506 hiring influencers in 13 U.S. metro areas in 2016; NCVO’s 2023 report covers volunteering in Great Britain. These are survey findings about volunteering generally, not MissionXP outcomes or guarantees of career advancement.

THREE WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE

Bring the experience
you have.

You do not need to help with everything. Choose the roles and coaching areas that match what you know and the time you can give.

01 / COACH

Help someone prepare.

Career Coach

Give practical feedback as a jobseeker decides where to focus and how to show their value.

  • Review a résumé or LinkedIn profile
  • Practice interviews and talking points
  • Work through outreach and follow-ups

02 / TEACH

Share how the work gets done.

Skills Trainer

Lead or support live instruction that connects professional skills to real situations.

  • Share experience from your field
  • Help people practice a specific skill
  • Bring context to a lesson or exercise

03 / CONNECT

Bring more people into the mission.

Fund and Friend Raiser

Help re:WORK TRAINING reach people and organizations that want to support jobseekers.

  • Introduce a potential volunteer
  • Connect a colleague or organization
  • Support or share the nonprofit’s work

Make room for the commitment that fits. Onboarding offers 4+, 8+, or 16+ hours per quarter. Choose your availability and interests when you join.

HELP BUILD SOCIAL CAPITAL

“It’s not what you know, but who you know.”

Help someone’s
talent get seen.

What someone knows matters. So does having people who understand their strengths and are willing to support them.

Social capital is the trust, knowledge, and support people can access through relationships. You help build it by listening, sharing useful context, and following through.

Make their value clearer.

Help a jobseeker connect their experience to a target role and explain what they can contribute.

Share the context they need.

Talk about how your field works, what teams look for, and questions worth asking before applying.

Build on the conversation.

Offer a useful next step. Follow up, share a resource, or make a thoughtful introduction when there is a fit.

YOUR IMPACT. YOUR GROWTH.

See who you help.
Show how you grow.

MissionXP connects the support you give with a record of your own experience. Your Impact shows who you’ve supported. Your Growth shows activity types, hours, relationship depth, and badge progress.

  • Jobseekers supported through linked activity
  • Contributed hours and types of interaction
  • People who have named you a Champion
  • Achievements and next badge goals

Use those records to choose your next development goal and find specific examples for your career story. The numbers document participation; your reflection explains what you learned.

MEET MARK HENDRICKX · RE:WORK CHAMPION

The relationship
goes both ways.

Mark shares how volunteering helped him recognize his own strengths, learn from others, and build lasting professional relationships.

In his story, a former mentee later referred him to an opportunity at TransUnion, where he went on to secure a role.

“You don’t necessarily know who can help whom.”

BEFORE YOU JOIN

A few things
you might be wondering.

How can volunteering support my own career growth?

Coaching and teaching give you opportunities to practice communication, feedback, and leadership. Your Impact and Your Growth help you review recorded hours, activities, relationships, and achievements. Use those details alongside your own reflection to describe what you contributed and learned in a résumé, LinkedIn profile, or development conversation. Your experience and outcomes will depend on how you participate.

Who can become a Champion?

Bring professional experience you can share with someone navigating a job search. Coaches, hiring managers, working professionals, and experienced alumni can contribute different perspectives. During onboarding, choose the roles and coaching areas that fit your experience.

How much time should I set aside?

The Champion onboarding form offers 4+, 8+, or 16+ hours per quarter. Choose the level that fits your availability. The time and format of individual activities depend on the opportunity; signing up does not assign you to a session immediately.

Is there a fee to volunteer through MissionXP?

Creating a Champion account and using MissionXP to track your contributions is free. Giving financially is a separate way to support re:WORK TRAINING, and is not required to volunteer as a coach or trainer.

Do I need to find someone a job?

You can contribute through useful feedback, interview practice, industry context, or an introduction when it makes sense. You are not promising a job or referral. Let relationships develop through listening, sharing your perspective, and following through on what you offer.

Is Champion support only for Academy participants?

MissionXP is available to jobseekers without Academy enrollment. The Academy is a separate, optional tech-sales training program from re:WORK TRAINING. Some volunteer opportunities, such as live instruction, are connected to a specific program; check the details of each opportunity.

How does MissionXP connect my support to my profile?

Add your LinkedIn profile URL to your MissionXP profile. Jobseekers use that URL when adding you to their contacts, helping connect their recorded interactions with your Champion profile. Your Impact brings together linked support activity, contributed hours, and people who have named you a Champion. Those records reflect participation; they do not measure every part of a relationship.

GIVE BACK. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS. GROW.

Make a difference for someone.
Build something for yourself.

Support a jobseeker. Practice your skills. Make your impact visible.
